Project Engineer

NLS Power Plant · Full-time

Employment Type: [Full-Time / Contract]

Position Summary

The Waste-to-Energy (WtE) Project Engineer is responsible for the design, development, and execution of engineering projects within our energy-from-waste facilities. This role bridges the gap between project management and complex technical engineering, ensuring that systems designed to convert municipal solid waste, biomass, or industrial waste into usable energy (electricity, steam, or heat) are efficient, compliant, and delivered on schedule. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in process, mechanical, or electrical engineering, with specific experience in thermal power, biological processes, or waste management infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering & Design

  • Design and develop technical systems for waste management and power generation, including thermal combustion processes, boiler systems, steam turbines, and flue gas treatment.
  • Develop, review, and approve critical engineering deliverables such as Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), General Arrangement drawings, and 3D models.
  • Perform engineering calculations, mass/energy balances, and feasibility studies to evaluate the cost and viability of plant upgrades or new builds.
  • Provide technical support during the optioneering and conceptual design phases of new energy-from-waste projects.

Project Management & Execution

  • Manage the end-to-end lifecycle of assigned plant projects, ensuring they are delivered within scope, budget, and schedule.
  • Prepare technical specifications, tender documents, and bid evaluations for equipment procurement and sub-contractor services.
  • Act as the primary technical interface between the plant operations team, detailed engineering teams, Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), and EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) contractors.
  • Identify, mitigate, and report on project risks, delays, or cost overruns to senior management.

Construction, Commissioning & Operations Support

  • Oversee site installations, providing technical oversight during the construction and integration of mechanical, electrical, and control systems (DCS/PLC).
  • Lead or support Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), and plant commissioning phases to ensure systems perform to design specifications.
  • Assist the plant maintenance teams in troubleshooting complex operational issues, identifying root causes of plant failures, and implementing engineering solutions to improve plant reliability and availability.

Compliance, Health, and Safety

  • Ensure all designs and project executions comply with strict environmental legislation, emissions standards, and planning regulations.
  • Incorporate Safety in Design (SiD) principles and ensure strict adherence to plant Health, Safety, Security, and Environment (HSSE) protocols during all project phases.

Required Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Process, or Electrical Engineering (A Master’s degree or Professional Engineer/Chartered status is a plus).
  • Experience: Minimum of [Insert Number, e.g., 5+] years of engineering experience in heavy industry, preferably within Waste-to-Energy, biomass, thermal power generation, or petrochemical plants.
  • Technical Skills: * Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks) and engineering modeling tools.
    • Strong understanding of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and power generation cycles.
    • Familiarity with environmental control systems (e.g., scrubbers, baghouses, continuous emissions monitoring systems).
  • Project Skills: Proven track record in project management, contract administration, and working with cross-functional, multi-disciplinary teams.

Key Competencies

  • Analytical Problem Solving: Ability to troubleshoot complex mechanical or process issues and implement practical engineering solutions.
  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders, lenders, or investors.
  • Time Management: Highly organized with a demonstrated ability to manage multiple project workstreams simultaneously without sacrificing quality.
  • Adaptability: Comfortable working both in a corporate office environment and directly on the floor of a heavy industrial plant.
